The name derives from the church's location on the site of the north gate of Oxford when it was surrounded by a city wall. Originally built around 1000–1050, with the tower from 1040 still in existence, the church is Oxford's oldest building.

Terrick WilliamsCaptioned Terrick Williams ARA (PC_Ledoux19) John Terrick Williams RA RI ROI (1860-1936), better known as Terrick Williams, was a British painter who was a member of the Royal Academy. He was born on 20 July 1860 in Liverpool, the son of a businessman and educated at King's College School, Wimbledon. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1904 and an Associate of the Royal Academy on 18 November 1924. He died in Plymouth on 20 July 1936, aged 76, after a number of years of indifferent health.
