Boer War Soldiers MemorialThe Boer War memorial stands at the front of the Swan Hotel and is dedicated as follows: “To the memory of the Officers and men of the Bedfordshire Regiments and of the Bedfordshire men serving in other branches of the Imperial Forces who lost their lives in the South African Campaign and whose names are hereon recorded. Catherine Street (Catte Street) looking southTuck “Oilette” postcard unused - Oxford series V (Ref: PC_OxfOther_0161) Original watercolour by H B Wimbush The name of this street was recorded as Kattestreete in the early 13th century, as Mousecatchers' Lane (Vicus Murilegorum) in 1442, and as Cat Street in the 18th century. In the mid-19th century it became Catherine Street. However, there was another street of this name in east Oxford and in 1930 the City Council changed the name to Catte Street, using a 15th-century spelling.

James Allen Shuffrey (1858–1939) was a British Victorian and Edwardian watercolour artist particularly associated with Oxford and Oxfordshire. He was born in 1859 in Wood Green, Witney, Oxfordshire, into an old Wood Green family of blanket weavers and tanners of Huguenot origin. From 1877, Shuffrey worked as a bank clerk for the London County Bank in Abingdon, Arundel and Petersfield. In 1902 he moved to Oxford and took up painting full time. He was among the first members of the British Watercolour Society and became a member of the Oxford Art Society. He is particularly noted for his paintings of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Oxford.
