Art Nouveau et sim

This album contains a selection of cards showing Art Nouveau and similar images from the Edwardian and pre-WW1 era by a variety of artists including Raphael Kirchner (1876-1917), Xavier Sager (1870-1930), Charles Naillod (1876-1941), Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) and Émile Dupuis (1877-1958).  Also included are art cards by Helmut Skarbina (1888-1945).

Art Nouveau was an international style of art, architecture, and applied art, especially the decorative arts, known in different languages by different names, for example Jugendstil in German or the Modern Style (British Art Nouveau style) in English. The style, which was most popular between 1890 and 1910, was a reaction against the academic art, eclecticism and historicism of 19th century architecture and decoration. It was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines, and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, glass, ceramics and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces.

He was born in 1884 in Douchery, France and studied under Luc-Olivier Merson, Leon Bonnat and Fernand Cormon in Paris, where he became established as a painter and decorative artist and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais and the Humorists' Salon. He died in 1965 in Annecy, France.

  • PC_ArtN_FrFashion-GLéonnec01Georges Léonnec (1881 – 1940), the brother of the novelist Félix Léonnec, began his career as a cartoonist selling drawings to eewspapers in 1899. After participating in World War I he worked as an illustrator for the magazine La Vie Parisienne. He worked for several other publications including Fantasio and Le Sourire. He was also well known for his advertising illustrations for Byrrh apéritif wine, Dufayel department stores, and the Casino of Paris.

Born in Jamestown, New York, he studied at the Art Students League and the Academy of Julian in Paris in 1896 with J. P. Laurens, Constant and Bouguereau. He returned to America around 1901/02 to work producing illustrations for postcards, literary works, and magazines, including World magazine and over 40 covers for the Saturday Evening Post World. He died in New York in 1929.

  • PC_NeoC_HRyland01Postcard franked London 1905 - Pub? - Series No 179D "Apple Blossom" Henry Ryland (1856–1924) was a British painter, book illustrator, decorator and designer. He was born in Biggleswade and studied in London at the South Kensington Art School, and at Heatherley's. He also studied in Paris under Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, and at the Académie Julian under Gustave Boulanger and Lefebvre. He specialized in highly finished watercolour paintings containing images of young women in classical draperies on marble terraces. His watercolours were widely reproduced as prints. He died on 23 November 1924.

  • PC_Toorop01Unused postcard - Pub: Het Hollandsche Uitgevershuis, Amsterdam - Illustration by Jan Toorop 1920 Johannes Theodorus 'Jan’ Toorop (1858-1928) was a Dutch-Indonesian painter, who worked in various styles, including Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Pointillism. Born on 20 December 1858 in Indonesia, he left in 1869 for the Netherlands, where he studied in Delft and Amsterdam. In 1880 he became a student at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. From 1882 to 1886 he lived in Brussels where he joined Les XX (Les Vingts), a group of artists centred on James Ensor. In the late 19th century Toorop lived for 20 years in a small house on the market in the seaside town Domburg, Walcheren, Zeeland. After 1900 he turned to Art Nouveau styles, in which a similar play of lines is used for decorative purposes, without any apparent symbolic meaning. In 1905, he converted to Catholicism and began producing religious works. He also created book illustrations, posters, and stained glass designs. He died in the Hague on 3 March 1928.
