• PC_CobbShinn01-Style+SuffrageUnused postcard - Pub: ? - Artist - Cobb Shinn (1887 – 1951) Conrad (“Cobb”) X. Shinn was born in 1887 in Fillmore, Indiana. He attended the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis from 1907 to 1909. Even as a student he published postcard cartoons on various subjects, including this one from a series of images of Charlie Chaplin - here poking fun at Edwardian fashions. In November 1917, Shinn at age 30, volunteered for the Army. He ultimately was assigned to a unit that made camouflage cloth to confuse enemy air strikes. He sent home humorous cartoons of his army life, which the local paper says were also printed by many other newspapers. Shinn returned safely to Indianapolis in 1919 to a changed art landscape. The “Golden Age” of postcard collecting had faded and with it had gone the demand for his postcard designs. Shinn adjusted by changing to book illustration and writing books of his own. Shinn died on January 28, 1951, and is buried in Bluff Creek Cemetery in Greenwood, Indiana.

His work as a wartime propagandist included the poster (right) for which he is most renowned, the Lord Kitchener poster design, which first appeared on the cover of the weekly magazine London Opinion on 5 September 1914. Leete died of a seizure, following a heart attack, at his home in Pembroke Square, London, in 1933.

• PC_Fr-Boutet01Early unused French postcard - Original suffragette-themed sketch by Henri Boutet (PC_FrBoutet01) Henri Boutet (1851-1919) was a French engraver and illustrator. He was born in Sainte-Hermine (Vendée) in 1851. In the 1890s he specialised in the production of etchings representing women in negligees, resulting in his being nicknamed the "little master of the corset" or the "painter of the midinette". With his growing reputation, Boutet launched his own publishing house and sold his productions to periodicals such as Le Frou-frou, L'Assiette au beurre and Le Pêle-Mêle. In 1902 he published " Les Modes Feminines du XIXe Siecle " which met with instant acclaim. He died in Paris on 9 June 1919.

• PC_FredMay01Unused postcard with cartoon caricature by Fred May (PC_FredMay01) Fred May (1891-1976) was a caricaturist and artist, born in Wallasey, Cheshire. He attended the local Liscard School of Art and Reading University. May's earliest drawings were produced for the Liverpool Daily Post and North Eastern Daily Gazette. His first cartoons for the Tatler were sent home in 1917 from the trenches where he was serving as an infantry officer with the Green Howards. He was asked to provide caricatures of men on the Western Front between the shelling. He developed an acute, gentle and humorous style from the 1920s onwards, caricaturing personalities including Winston Churchill, who autographed his own likeness. May served again during the Second World War, when he was honoured with the Legion d'Honneur, and after the war he continued to work for the Tatler, but also the Graphic and Weekly Sketch and News Chronicle right up until his death in 1976. He was a nephew of the cartoonist Phil May .

Schilling (1874-1920) was a legendary American one-armed athlete who defied all odds to become the first man to walk around the world for a wager. Embarking on his first epic adventure in August 1897 from New York City, Schilling set out with nothing but a newspaper suit and penniless pockets. Over nine arduous years, he traversed an astounding distance of 55,000 miles, encircling the globe and etching his name into history books as one of humanity's greatest explorers.
